Developmental cataracts with blue and white opacifications dispersed throughout the nucleus and cortex of the lens are known as blue dot cataracts, Cataract Punctata Caerulea, or Cerulean Cataracts. Blue dot cataracts are rarely removed until adolescence and are often asymptomatic until the age of 18 to 24 months. Treatment options include posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation and surgical cataract excision.

It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and is a congenital disease.

Typically it is asymptomatic, the patient may develop cataracts at an adult younger age. Blurred or dim vision, nyctalopia, photophobia and glare and colored halos are symptoms of blue dot cataract.

Patients with Blue dot cataracts typically have strong eyesight and wait until they are well into age before undergoing cataract surgery. Since many newborns do not exhibit any symptoms of a cataract until they are 18 to 24 months old, blue dot cataracts are regarded as a type of developing cataract rather than a genuine congenital cataract. The symptoms of blue dot cataracts may not become apparent until the third or fourth decade of life, when patients notice a gradual loss of vision in both eyes. On the other hand, children who exhibit symptoms of visually significant cataracts, such as nystagmus and amblyopia, may need cataract surgery sooner.

There are no known methods to stop the growth and progression of blue dot cataracts. Regular eye exams and, eventually, cataract surgery are part of the standard of care. You might undergo a small incision cataract surgery (SICS) or a phacoemulsification procedure.
