Eye Problems due to Dengue while rare, can cause certain mild and some serious eye conditions. Sub-conjunctival haemorrhage, macular chorioretinitis, macular oedema, dengue related optic neuritis, retinal haemorrhage, vitritis, and anterior uveitis have all been reported with Dengue. Let us discuss these in a bit of detail.

Subconjunctival haemorrhage: The conjunctiva is a mucous membrane that covers the eye and the eyelids. Subconjunctival haemorrhage is a small bleed behind the conjunctiva. The small blood vessels within the conjunctiva may break spontaneously or from injury causing a red area on the sclera resulting in sub conjunctival haemorrhage. Generally, this resolves on its own with no need for treatment.

Macular chorioretinitis: Is an infection of the choroid and retina of the eye (the choroid is a layer between the retina and sclera). This is a serious disease and affects vision

Macular edema: The macula, the region of the retina responsible for central vision, can thicken due to macular edema or swelling within its layers leading to a decrease in vision.

Dengue Related Optic Neuritis: Inflammation of the optic nerve resulting in blurred vision or decreased visual field.

Retinal hemorrhage: This eye condition causes bleeding into the tissue that is sensitive to light on the back of the eye’s wall. This condition can also affect vision

Vitritis: This condition causes the jelly in the back of the eye to become inflamed.

Anterior uveitis: This condition causes inflammation of the front compartment of the eye.
