The cornea is the front clear dome shaped structure in the eye. This structure has thickness to it and it is through this structure that we measure the pressure inside the eye known as intraocular pressure. Corneal Hysteresis (CH) is an assessment of the cornea’s ability to absorb and dissipate energy and has been shown to be independently predictive of visual field progression or loss of visual field in glaucoma. Different from corneal thickness or topography, which are geometrical attributes, Corneal Hysteresis is a property of the tissues of the eye.

A confident glaucoma risk assessment can be aided with Corneal Hysteresis.  Only Ocular Response Analyzer® G3 measures Corneal Hysteresis and Corneal Compensated IOP (IOPcc) using patented technology is used to assess the unique corneal biomechanical properties of a patients eye. Corneal Hysteresis has shown to be an independent risk factor and more predictive of glaucoma development and progression than central corneal thickness or intraocular pressure measument alone. Using biomechanics, IOPcc  or corneal compensated intraocular pressure is less influenced by corneal properties than Goldmann applanation tonometry which is the standard means of measuring eye pressure. This leads to a more accurate measurement of intraocular pressure in your eye. Clinical research shows compelling evidence that CH is a powerful asset for assessing patients at high risk for developing glaucoma and disease progression. CH is an important factor in determining the risk of disease progression not only in open angle glaucoma but also in normotensive glaucoma. It is also extremely useful in patients who have had refractive or laser surgery in the past to get rid of spectacles as this procedure leads to errors in measurement of eye pressure when using standardized equipment.
