When you spend long hours working on the computer, reading a book or driving, you may experience what some would call eye strain. The condition of eye strain is more of a symptom. Individuals have various ways of using the phrase. When someone says their eyes are tired or watery, another person may indicate they have blurry vision. Because they are not wearing the proper glasses, some persons may experience headaches that they attribute to eye strain, while others may experience face muscle fatigue from squinting for extended periods of time.

When you are focused on a work, it is worthwhile to make little adjustments to improve your eye comfort. Eye strain does not harm the eyes or result in lasting damage.

Long durations of concentration without blinking might make your eyes feel dry and worn out. The eye strain brought on by using a computer is the same as the strain brought on by long periods of driving or reading. Sitting close to a vent that blows hot or cold air in your face might cause your eyes to dry out very rapidly.

Blurriness might result from an incorrect prescription for contacts or glasses, which worsens the feeling of eye strain. The eyes can become tired while working in a bright or dim environment.

If we have poor posture when we do tasks, it can cause neck, shoulder and back pain, which can add to the discomfort we feel and some people may attribute it to eye strain.

Eye strain from extended computer use can be avoided with a few simple workstation modifications. Keep a humidifier next to your desk and keep a bottle of artificial tears on handy. Your eyes should be slightly downwardly directed while using the computer. Consult your doctor about using computer glasses if you have difficulties seeing your screen. These progressive glasses are made especially for computer screens, which are typically placed between 20 and 26 inches from the face.

Remember to adhere to the “20-20-20” guideline as well, Shift your eyes every 20 minutes to focus for at least 20 seconds on anything that is at least 20 feet away.

Your ophthalmologist can help if you are still having eye strain after changing your workspace. Describe your eye symptoms, including when they occur and how long they last, at your appointment. Your doctor will inspect your eye muscles, look for signs of dry eye, and determine whether you require a new prescription for contacts or glasses.
