There are numerous factors that interrupt the normal tear film and result in dry eyes. Fatty oils, watery fluid, and mucus are the three layers that make up your natural tear film. The natural tear fil mis meant to lubricate and protect the eye. This mixture of oils, water and mucus maintains the lubricated, clear, and smooth surface of your eyes, allowing us to see clearly and without a sense of discomfort. There are several causes of tear film failure, including hormonal changes, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory glands in the eyelids, and allergic eye conditions. A person can suffer from one or a combination of these factors. Reduced tear production or increased tear evaporation may be the cause of dry eyes in some people.

When tears are unable to adequately lubricate the eyes, dry eye is a disorder that develops. Either reduced tear production or faster tear evaporation is to blame for this and both become causes for instability in the natural tear film. Severe or persistent dry eye, if not addressed can also permanently harm the corneal surface and impair vision. When your body is unable to create enough water, dry eyes may result. The term keratoconjunctivitis sicca is used to describe this condition. Common causes of decreased tear production include:

1. Aging itself leads to decreased tear production.

2. Certain medical conditions including Sjogren’s syndrome, allergic eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, graft vs. host disease, sarcoidosis, thyroid disorders or vitamin A deficiency can all cause and exacerbate or worsen dry eye.

3. Certain medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, hormone replacement therapy, antidepressants, and drugs for high blood pressure, acne, birth control and Parkinson’s disease also cause or worsen dry eyes.

4. Corneal nerve de- sensitization can be caused by contact lens use, nerve damage or can sometimes be caused by eye surgery. If dry eye occurs after eye surgery the symptoms are often temporary and can be fixed.

Increased tear evaporation can also cause dry eye.Meibomian glands, tiny glands that create an oil film on the edge of your eyelids, may get blocked. People with rosacea or other skin conditions are more likely to have blocked meibomian glands.

1. Blepharitis (meibomian gland dysfunction)

2. Blinking less frequently, which tends to happen when you have certain disorders, like Parkinson’s disease, or while you are concentrating on something, like reading, driving, or using a computer or digital screen.

3. Eyelid issues such ectropion (turning outward) and inversion (turning inward) (entropion)

4. Eye allergies

5. Frequent use of preservatives ontaminants ineye drops

6. Persistent or heightened exposure to smoke, wind, or dry air

7. Lack of nutrients like vitamin A

Significant complications in term of eye health can result due to untreated dry eye. Those who have dry eyes may encounter these issues:

Eye infections can be caused by dry eyes. The surface if your eyes is protected from infection by your tears. You could experience an increased risk of eye infection if your tears are insufficient to keep the surface protected.

Damage can result to the surface of your eyes. Severe dry eyes can cause eye irritation, corneal surface abrasion, corneal ulcers, and vision loss can occur if left untreated.

Decreased quality of life can result due to dry eye. This can lead to a reduced standard of living Daily tasks like reading might be challenging when one has dry eyes.
