Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea becomes thin and bulges outwards in a cone shape, making it weaker and less stable. LASIK involves removing a small amount of corneal tissue to reshape the cornea and improve visual acuity.  Hence, in individuals who have keratoconus, removing additional corneal tissue through LASIK can further weaken the cornea, potentially causing it to bulge out even more and leading to more severe vision problems.

Additionally, LASIK is not ideal for people with keratoconus because the irregular shape of the cornea can make it difficult to accurately predict the results of the procedure. In LASIK, the laser is programmed to reshape the cornea based on a predetermined pattern, but this may not be effective in correcting the unique shape of the cornea in individuals with keratoconus. As a result, LASIK may not provide the desired improvement in vision and may even result in complications such as under-correction, over-correction, or irregular astigmatism.

Furthermore, LASIK is not recommended for people with keratoconus because the condition can progress over time, and the procedure may not be effective in the long term. Even if LASIK is successful in improving vision initially, the progression of keratoconus can cause further changes in the shape of the cornea, leading to a recurrence of vision problems.

To summarize, LASIK is not a suitable treatment for keratoconus because it can further weaken the cornea, may not effectively correct the irregular shape of the cornea, and may not provide long-term improvement in vision due to the progressive nature of the condition. Alternative treatments, such as corneal cross-linking, intacs, topography-guided PRK, gas permeable contact lenses, and scleral contact lenses, may be more appropriate for people with keratoconus.
