Ozurdex, is an implant containing the corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is injected into the eye by an ophthalmologist to treat macular edema and posterior uveitis.
Macular edema is the swelling of the center of the retina (the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye). It may occur as a consequence of blockage of the veins carrying blood from the back of the eye, as well as due to the damage to blood vessels caused by diabetes. Due to macular edema, one may experience diminished central field of vison, resulting in decreased ability to read or drive
Posterior uveitis is inflammation of the back portion of the eye. Ozurdex is one of the treatment options available for non-infectious posterior uveitis.
