Diabetic retinopathy screenings are essential. Diabetes is a systemic disease; however, it can affect the eye as well. The effect on the eye can be as dire as blindness. Hence, it is imperative that diabetic screening be carried out to prevent the loss of vision. Screening can tell you if you need treatment to slow the progression of vision loss.
Diabetic retinopathy screenings are important in all diabetics, whether it is type 1 or type 2. Additional risk factors are uncontrolled diabetes, long duration of diabetes, older age, co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure or cholesterol, and nephropathy (deterioration of kidney function).
For diabetic retinopathy screening a visit to an ophthalmologist is necessary. The ophthalmologist will examine the retina in order to screen the vessels in the eye. In order for a clear, broad image of the eye, pupils need to be dilated for which dilating eye drops are administered to patients; it can take up to 20 minutes for the medications to fully dilate the eyes. The eye drops might sting for a short while.
Once the eyes are dilated enough, a detailed examination of the eye and retina is done to evaluate and screen for diabetic changes to the eye. Further testing may be required if changes are observed on the retina or vessels.
