Nearsightedness, or myopia, is when near objects appear clear but distant objects appear blurry. This happens when light rays incorrectly bend (refract) due to the shape of the eye or specific portions of the eye. Normally, light rays should fall on the retina (the back portion of the eye), to give a clear image. In myopia, however, the image is formed in front of the retina resulting in a blurry image.

Myopia generally runs in families and stabilizes in the twenties, once development of the eye is complete. Symptoms of nearsightedness include blurred vision while looking at distance, headaches, eyestrain, the need to squint to see clearly. It specially comes to light when one experiences difficult in driving, in particular at night time.

In children, myopia is generally highlighted when there is a difficulty to see what’s written on boards in the classroom.  Non-verbal and young children may exhibit non specific signs such as squinting, blinking excessively, rubbing their eyes, unawareness of distant objects and going close to televisions to see clearly.

Nearsightedness can be verified by a simple eye checkup. It can be managed by the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Moreover, one can opt for refractive surgery too.
